The target of the study presented here was to determine the perception of the nursing behaviour by surgical nurses and patients, to establish relationships between demographic characteristics of nurses and patients and their perception of the nursing behaviour and to provide their comparison.
The sample of the quantitative, descriptive correlation study consisted of two groups - a group of surgical nurses (n = 185) from four hospitals of the Moravian-Silesian Region and a group of patients (n = 279) from the same departments. The data accumulation was implemented between 1. 9. and 30. 11. 2009 with the use of the CBI-24 standardized measurement tool (Wolf et al., 1998).
The CBI-24 questionnaire with four dimensions of items was simultaneously used in nurses and patients and the Liker scale was employed for the evaluation. In general, the nurses expressed their evaluation of the nursing behaviour by higher average degrees compared to patients (Mnurses = 4.15-5.52; Mpatients = 3.93-5.15). They considered the moderation of disease symptoms and patient pain as the most important features of their behaviour. The most important manifestations of taking care of patients were the instrumental skill of nurses (skilful use and management of instruments and devices, management of professional knowledge and skills). Both groups considered as least important the items of Interconnections (spending time with patients and including patients into planning the care). Nurses with the secondary school education evaluated their knowledge and skill by higher degrees compared to those with the university education. Patients hospitalized for longer periods of time evaluated the nursing behaviour of nurses more positively compared to those who experienced short-term hospitalization.
The results of the study demonstrated that there are differences in the perception of the nursing behaviour between nurses and patients. The comparison of opinions of patients and nurses is of importance as a feedback for the caregiver and for the patient-oriented development of the nursing care.
