Introduction: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in European countries. Prevention and the associated health literacy are among the effective tools for reducing the incidence of this disease and serve to reduce its consequences. Goal: To examine the relationship between socioeconomic factors of health literacy and modifiable risk factors in connection with ischemic stroke. Methods: A quantitative survey strategy. The research was conducted using the technique of a standardized controlled interview between the interviewer and the respondent. The research group included 1,004 citizens. A combination of a standardized overall...

Introduction: Strokes are the third most common cause of hospitalization in Slovakia. This is a serious social and economic problem, because after a stroke almost half of the patients have a persistent neurological deficit. The goal of this research was to assess the quality of life of patients who have had an acute stroke. Design: Quantitative cross-sectional study. Methods: The Stroke Impact Scale (SIS 3.0) was completed by 80 patients, an average age of 69.9 (± 9.49) years within 28 days after a stroke. The results were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation. Results: The average score for each SIS 3.0 domain ranged...

The main objective of this paper is the study of patient self-sufficiency functional tests in the early rehabilitation stage of stroke, and their further development in relation to the initial disability severity. Attention is paid to the identification of links between the first weeks of early rehabilitation therapy and the patients' state one year after their discharge from the early rehabilitation ward. There were 87 patients in early rehabilitation wards in three different parts of the Czech Republic. One year after their discharge, 29 of them were tested again. The FIM (Functional Independence Measure) values from the follow-up check statistically...

Background: Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a disease that causes severe disability. For this reason, we established an interprofessional rehabilitation team consisting of physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers operating in home settings - in an effort to minimize the consequences of long-term disability. Objectives: Evaluate the development of postural and balance functions (over a 9-month period) in 17 clients with ABI undergoing individualized 3-month physiotherapy in the home setting. Methods: Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up and Go test (TUG) were used to quantify the functional status of the clients. A total...

Aim: The aim of this review was to analyze eating habits and food composition in stroke survivors. Methods: In the years 01/2000-06/2020, research published in the following databases was analyzed: Pubmed, EBSCO, Science Direct, Scopus. The literature review integrated 9 studies. Results: Studies included in the review were published mainly in the years 2015-2019. Dietary analysis in the research was predominantly focused on fruit/vegetable intake and salt intake. Consumption of fruits and vegetables in stroke survivors is not at an adequate level and their intake is lower in comparison with a healthy population. Qualitative analysis of salt intake...

Quality of life and costs related to stroke survivors are important issues for the Czech healthcare system. Early rehabilitation after stroke has a great potential to improve patients' quality of life as well as to contribute to saving long-term societal costs. A tri-centre pragmatic longitudinal study was focused on the economic analysis of early rehabilitation after stroke in hospitals in the Czech Republic. The research also revealed dissimilarities in procedures between the involved hospitals. The number of patients included in the study was 87 (Prague - 29, Ústí nad Labem - 31, Ostrava - 27). All of them were admitted to the early rehabilitation...

Introduction: Self-awareness deficit is a complex cognitive-behavioural disorder that is typical of patients after acquired brain injury. Deficiency of self-awareness in these patients causes reduced motivation for rehabilitation or unrealistic expectations. It leads to poorer results in therapy and problems in engaging in activities in the wider community and in employment. Aim: The aim of this review study is to describe the definitions and theoretical models of self-awareness and to summarize the conclusions of research on how to assess self-awareness in adult patients after acquired brain injury in the last 15 years. Methods: Review with elements...
