Atropine, a natural alkaloid of the Atropa belladona and other plants of the family Solanaceae, is a competitive antagonist of muscarinic cholinergic receptors. Atropine serves as a medicine with diverse pharmacological effects. It reduces the secretion in bronchi and salivary glands, it restricts sweating and causes dilatation of pupils, it lowers the heart frequency and through blocking acetylcholine effects it is active as an antidote in poisoning with organophosphate insecticides and nervous toxins.
