Concept of Czech professional nursing in context of worldwide nursingNursing - Review

The history of nursing was characterized by different periods from intuitive nursing, nursing activities associated with church orders and period of educational stage in nursing to the modern nursing concept. Considerations of nursing are necessarily associated with a wider discussion concerning philosophical foundations and biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects of taking care of healthy and diseased humans. The definition of nursing was not simple, since theorists of nursing had to take into account an enormous diversity of the nursing care, which involves taking care of healthy individuals, diseased persons as well as groups of persons. The nursing care in particular countries exerts considerable differences, since there are different conditions, under which it is implemented. The development of nursing has not always been identical and there is a difference between nursing approaches employed at the beginning of the last century and at the time being. In nursing concepts, the description of the examination subject, delimitation of the role of nurses in the multidisciplinary healthcare team, level of the teaching curriculum and identification of nursing research fields are encountered to different extents. Last but not least, attempts to define nursing reflect the health politics at local as well as national levels. The target of the review presented here is to show the historically variable and culturally variable nature of Czech nursing and the variability of its concepts as observed in professional publications and articles. In data from the literature, we can find different nursing concepts, which have been dynamically developed in the course of the professionalization in the nursing discipline. In the first part of our text, we pay our attention to important stages of worldwide nursing and in the second part we describe the development of the Czech nursing concept. We follow and describe the variability of nursing by decades from the beginning of the last century. We conclusively summarize basic milestones as shown from the analysis of the nursing concept in particular periods.
