The aim of the work was to find out the occurrence of burnout syndrome in nurses working on neurosurgical wards and the impact of socio-demographic factors of nurses on the degree of their burnout syndrome.
The set was formed by 74 nurses working on all neurosurgical wards of Moravia-Silesia region - Teaching Hospital Ostrava and City Hospital Ostrava. Data were collected in December 2011 and in January 2012 by standardized questionnaire Burnout Measure (BM) - Test of fatigue rate. Nurses judged 21 items which represent three main parts of burnout syndrome - feeling of physical fatigue, emotional and psychic exhaustion.
It was found out that total rate of burnout syndrome occurrence in nurses working on neurosurgical wards in Moravia-Silesia region can be evaluated as satisfactory. Burnout syndrome symptoms which were embodied by nurses on standard in-patient wards and in out-patient running were more expressive than in nurses working on ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and on the spinal unit. The higher rate of burnout syndrome was confirmed in older nurses, in nurses with lower education, in nurses dissatisfied with their job and in nurses with longer practice on neurosurgical ward.
Although the results didn't indicate alarming occurrence of burnout syndrome, it's impossible to underestimate the problems. Consequential further education concerning prevention and coping mechanisms is necessary as the work of a nurse is linked up with a higher stress than in other professions.
