The probability of the occurrence of a poor health condition in chronic patients can also be associated with insufficient support from the social environment. Ever increasing body of evidence indicates that this may be an important factor in the resulting health condition (Kaplan, 1996; Bartlová, 2005; Křivohlavý 2001). The support on the part of the social environment was defined in many ways. In certain studies, it is characterized as a count of social contacts maintained by a certain person, i.e. extent of the social network. More recent studies demonstrate requirements for a solidarity and unity with the social communication network and mutual...

Kontakt 2009, 11(1):32-37 | DOI: 10.32725/kont.2009.005
The evidence-based nursing practice is a methodological approach to the clinical practice, within the framework of which the following four components are considered in decisions made by a nurse - research results, values, patient preferences, clinical experience of the nurse and availability of tools within the scope of a particular clinical environment. The nursing diagnostics is an independent field of practice based on evidences, which calls for certain specific features of particular steps of the process, mainly in the first step - in the formulation of clinical problems. The clinical questions formulated in the first step can cover different...

Canistherapy finds most frequently its applications as a supplementary method in persons with long-term course of the treatment with non-beneficial prognosis. One of forms of canistherapy - positioning - is particularly suitable for children with severe forms of poliomyelitis and those with combined defects. The target of the work presented here was to determine the ability to relax in a boy of 7 years of age with dystonic-dyskinetic form of poliomyelitis and severe retardation of the psychomotor development in the course of a canistherapeutic lesson; whether or possibly after what time period the relaxation of his muscle tone will be accomplished...

Screening of hearing defects in all the newborns is already being performed in most EU countries and in remaining countries its preparation is under way. The Czech Republic is also currently in this stage, where the nation-wide screening of the audition has not yet been ordered by law, e.g. in contrast to the Slovak Republic. All the perinatological centres provide screening of immature and risk newborns, but screening of the population of physiologic newborns is restricted to individual institutions only. This is rather due to personal problems of the examination (lack of personnel and considerable working load) than technical problems (instrumentation)....

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of joints involving as much as 1 % of the population. Rheumatoid arthritis exerts permanent progress and very frequently causes disability. This inflammatory disease particularly involves joints, but it can also involve other organs and systems, as e.g. the myocardium, lungs, muscles, tendons or white of the eye. The quality of life of these patients is affected by the activity of their disease and extent of damage to the joints. Patient organizations play an important role here. The Rheumatics-League associates patients with rheumatic diseases and all the persons, who are interested in helping...

Oncological diseases present a permanent danger, they permanently increase in number in our country and they are the second most important cause of the death, next to cardiovascular diseases. The situation in the occurrence of malignant gynaecological tumours in the Czech Republic is not beneficial compared with surrounding advanced West-European countries. The malignant disease hits the women in the most productive period of their life (the most frequent occurrence between 35 and 65 years of age) and has a principal impact on the family, working and social life of woman. Causes of this increasing rate of occurrence are very complex with all the health,...

The consideration of the functional condition is a part of taking care of elderly people and it is a principle of the nursing consideration. The level of self-sufficiency is evaluated by nurses working in inpatient medical and social institutions and nurses involved in primary care within the scope of the nursing anamnesis. From the practical standpoint, the knowledge is most important how the patient is able to manage activities of his/her daily life. Many functional tests are used for testing, which serve for objective evaluation of the degree of dependence in an elderly patient, for estimating the load and quantitative needs of the nursing personnel,...

The basic aspect of the nurse work is consideration of bio-psycho-social factors affecting the health. Nursing itself deals with persons in health and disease but also with those, whose health is threatened. Nurses are representatives of professions, through the mediation of which they can considerably affect a wide group of clients of all the age categories throughout the life, from the birth to the death. On the other hand, they are also recipients of the health care and thus also of nursing care at all the levels. They are thus also responsible for their own health promotion. Besides others, they provide the health care clients with information...

The term people with functional handicaps or people with special needs characterizes an individual and his/her specific features by a more positive concept compared with the negativistic concept of an individual considered as involved, defective or handicapped. The person with functional involvements, (which can either be somatic, sensory and mental ones or concern communication functions) cannot eliminate the disorder, but the fact, whether he/she will be handicapped, disadvantaged in all aspects or only in certain aspects of his/her life, depends on attitudes and activity of the society which he/she is living in.The change in our health-social...

The contemporary demographic trend is characterized by a prolongation of the average life span and increase in the number of seniors. The varying demographic parameters also considerably affect granting of the nursing care. Due to senile changes and limitations associated with diseases, the ability of seniors to perform common activities of their daily life is frequently disturbed. The self-care deficit and loneliness can induce the origination of negative emotions supporting development of depressive mood. The depressive mood can also result from feelings of the loneliness, uselessness, retirement or death of a partner. For a nurse working in the...

If we are searching for the way of understanding Romany people in questions concerning their attitude to the life, health and disease or style of life from the position of staff members of helping professions, it is necessary to consider cultural traditions, which affected their lives for centuries and which affect them to a certain extent even at the present time. The contribution deals with problems of factors principally affecting the existence of Romany people in the majority society and playing an important role in providing the culturally differentiated nursing care. Only mutual understanding of specific features of majority and minority societies...

Providing the culture-specific care belongs to basic characteristics of the modern nursing care not only in the Czech Republic. The number of members of the Chinese minority is stepwise being increased, similarly as the number of Chinese tourists. Different consideration of the health and disease markedly affects the attitude to and perception of the patient/client from different cultural environments, either from the professional point of view or from the standpoint of the patient/client. The healthcare personnel should be aware of main differences in the behaviour of members of minority groups (including tourists) not only in association with providing...

He/she is able to recognize appropriate and inappropriate points, is resolute, and his/her self-confidence or self-respect is not reduced. The disease is a hindrance in the process of satisfying human needs and it determines the way of expression and possibility of satisfying the needs. In association with a disease, one frequently pays his/her attention to the satisfaction of lower needs and is only transiently interested in needs at a higher...

The position of nurses in multidisciplinary teams is currently being considerably changed by the action of the health care transformation including transformation of nursery. The existence of healthcare organization with sufficient numbers of nurses, optimum personal structure of healthcare professionals, good atmosphere at work and cooperation between members of the whole team has enormous effects on the quality of the health care provided and on its results. It is to expect that, due to the fact that the Czech Republic is approaching EU countries, the pressure on the position of a nurse in a multidisciplinary team, particularly in the relationship...

Globalization is currently particularly understood as a negative process, which is inter alia manifested in banking, trade activities, information technologies, traffic in drugs, mafia practices and terrorism. These and further problems are addressed by one of leading moral authorities in late 20th and early 21st centuries, sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman. He considers that positive globalization, or the globalization of the social control, judiciary and legislation but mainly of all the ethical principles, which could establish an order and elucidate targets of these attempts, has not yet been appropriately developed.
